🥣 Textures by Stage
Every baby moves at their own pace — use these as a guide, not a strict schedule.
✨ Silky Smooth — Around 6 months
Start with completely lump-free purées. Fruit and vegetables should be steamed until very soft then blended with a little cooking liquid. For meat, cook until tender and moist — a dry blend won't work. First foods should be iron-rich: puréed red meat, iron-fortified cereal, or blended lentils all work beautifully from day one.
🍴 Lumpy & Mushy — Around 7 months
Move to fork-mashed textures with small, soft lumps — don't stay on silky smooth too long, as varied textures build the chewing muscles babies need for speech development. Gagging is normal at this stage (choking is not). Your baby can chew soft food even before any teeth arrive.
✋ Finger Foods — Around 8 months
Once baby can grasp objects, offer soft finger foods and let them lead. Cut food into finger-length strips for a palmar grasp, or small cubes as the pincer grip develops. Always squish-test first — if it won't squish between your thumb and finger, it's not safe. Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters; halve round foods like blueberries.
🍽️ Family Foods — Around 12 months
Your toddler is ready for most of what the rest of the family eats — just adapt the texture and hold the salt. Let them choose from a range of nutritious options rather than one strict plate. If they reject a food, keep offering it: repeated exposure (sometimes 10+ times) is how acceptance builds. Avoid raw carrot, whole nuts, and any hard round foods until age 3.
⚠️ Always consult your GP or paediatrician before starting solids, especially if your baby has eczema, an existing food allergy, or a strong family history of allergic disease. Harry & Rosie is a practical guide — not a substitute for personalised medical advice.
🥩 Start with Iron
Iron supports brain development — it's the most important nutrient to prioritise at 6 months.
Best Sources — Haem Iron (easily absorbed)
Beef or lamb — 50g cooked gives ~1.5mg iron. The redder the meat, the higher the iron content.
Pork — 0.6mg per 50g • Fish — 0.5mg • Chicken — 0.4mg
Aim for red meat 3–4 times a week to meet both iron and zinc needs.
Plant Sources — Non-Haem Iron
Cooked spinach — ¼ cup gives 2.0mg • Tofu — 1.2mg per 50g
Iron-fortified rice cereal — 1.1mg • Cooked egg — 1.0mg
Lentils or legumes — 0.9mg per ⅓ cup
Pair plant-iron with vitamin C (a little orange or capsicum) to boost absorption.
🍼 Dairy & Drinks
Breast milk or formula stays the main drink until 12 months. From 6 months you can introduce full-fat yoghurt, cheese and custard as part of meals. Full-cream cow's milk as a drink can start at 12 months. Offer tap water in a cup from 6 months alongside meals — no juice, cordial, soft drink or flavoured milk.
🍯 Food Safety Essentials
Avoid before 12 months: honey and raw egg (food safety risk).
Avoid before 3 years: whole nuts, raw carrot sticks, whole grapes, popcorn, and large coin-shaped foods — all choking hazards.
No added salt or sugar in baby food. Their taste buds are sensitive — they will enjoy the natural flavour of food without it. Add your own seasoning to the adult portion after serving baby.
Responsive feeding: babies know when they've had enough. If they turn away, close their mouth, or push food out — that's the fullness signal. Never push extra bites. A healthy relationship with food starts with trusting your baby's own hunger cues.
🧊 Prep, Store & Serve Safely
Before cooking — wash all fruit and veg, peel skin, trim fat from meat, and remove bones from fish.
Cooking — steam, boil or microwave until completely soft. Set some cooking liquid aside to adjust texture.
Fridge — cool quickly and store in sealed containers for up to 2 days.
Freezer — pour into ice-cube trays, cover and label with the date. Use within 4 weeks. Never refreeze a meal that's already been thawed.
Reheating — warm thoroughly (70°C+), stir well to remove hot spots, test on your lip before serving. Discard any leftovers — don't reheat a second time.
Teeth tip — don't share spoons with baby or clean their dummy in your mouth, as cavity bacteria transfer easily. Wipe gums after feeds from birth; start gentle brushing as teeth come through.
